As a writer for a fishing magazine, I’ve had the chance to visit many rivers and lakes across the country. However, the Blackfoot River in Montana is one that has really won my heart.
The book and movie “A River Runs Through It” made the Blackfoot River famous. It is a real gem of the west, with great fishing and many other fun things to do. In this piece, I’ll tell you everything I know about fishing on the Blackfoot River, from how to get to the river to what kinds of fish you can expect to catch.
Location and Access
From the Continental Divide to the Clark Fork River, the Blackfoot River runs through western Montana.
Along the river, there are several places where you can get to it. Some of these are along Highway 200 and near the towns of Missoula and Bonner.
Keep in mind that some parts of the river are on private land, so check if you need a ticket or if there are any other rules before you fish.
Fishing Techniques
As someone who loves fly fishing, I can tell you that the Blackfoot River is a fly fisher’s dream.
Rainbow, brown, and cutthroat fish all live in the river, and they all fight hard on the line. I suggest a 9-foot, 5-weight fly rod with a floater line and a variety of dry flies, nymphs, and streamers for gear.
The Elk Hair Caddis, Parachute Adams, Hare’s Ear Nymph, and Woolly Bugger are some of my favorite flies for the Blackfoot River.
On any fishing trip, you should use different methods and fly patterns based on where you are and the weather.
Fish Species
Rainbow and brown trout can be found all along the length of the Blackfoot River, which is a great trove of trout.
There are also cutthroat trout in the river, but they are more likely to be found in the upper parts.
Mountain whitefish and bull trout are two other fish that live in the Blackfoot River.
Best Times to Fish
Depending on the season and weather, the best time to fish on the Blackfoot River varies.
People like to go fishing in the spring and early summer when the water is high and the fish are eating. Fall is also a good time to go fishing because the weather is cooler and the fish are getting ready for the winter.
I think that early morning and late evening are the best times to fish.
Other Activities on the Blackfoot River
On the Blackfoot River, fishing is just one of many fun things to do for fun. The river is also great for kayaking, rafting, and tubing because it has both quiet and fast-moving parts.
Also in the area are a number of climbing trails, such as the Blackfoot River Trail and the Morrell Falls Trail.
If you want to fish in the river, there are a number of outfitters and guides who can help you plan your trip and give you the gear you need.
I’ll never forget what it was like to fish on the Blackfoot River in Montana. With its beautiful scenery, great fishing, and variety of fun things to do, the river has something for everyone.
I think the Blackfoot River is a great place to go fishing, no matter how experienced you are or how new you are. So, why don’t you just do it? Get your stuff together and go to the river!
