Buyer’s Guide – What to Look for When Choosing Waders

With all of these fishing waders reviews, you may be wondering how to make your choice. What makes the ideal set of fishing waders for you?

It all depends on what you need. However, there are some characteristics that you should always consider before making your choice.

Here is a brief guide of what to look for, and the different types of waders for sale.

Materials Used

The best waders are made from durable, waterproof, weatherproof materials. A popular material is neoprene.

youth waders

Neoprene is especially good for cooler climates and colder water. It’s well suited for winter fishing or ice fishing (though you made need some extra layers for ice fishing). Neoprene sets are also often insulated waders. The material is only semi-breathable

Another popular material for breathable waders that also keep you warm is nylon. Nylon waders are usually less expensive than neoprene, but still effective at keeping water out and keeping you warm and comfortable.

Nylon is a bit less durable than neoprene, but it’s also easier to move around in.

Some are also made of rubber. Rubber is a bit more unforgiving in terms of movement, so typically only hip waders are made of rubber. However, they are well insulated and stand up well against water.

There are other synthetic materials used by different brands. Double-check the type of material used and do a little research to determine what will be best for the type of fishing and environment you will be in.

Footwear Style

The two main types of “footwear” when it comes to water waders are barefoot (or booted) and stockings. Each style has its own advantages and disadvantages.

man casting a fly rod

It also changes the price and often dictates whether the waders are chest, hip, or full body.

Barefoot (also called booted) waders come with an attached boot. The term “barefoot” applies because you don’t need to add anything prior to putting on the outfit.

Since the boots are attached, there are also usually stockings inside, so the foot protection is already included.

This style is extra convenient because you just have to slip them on and off, no extra purchases required. They also tend to be more expensive for the same reason, but they might be worth it.

Stockingfoot waders, on the other hand, do not include fishing boots. They do have stockings sewn in, but you’ll have to buy boots separately.

Often the stockings are neoprene, to keep your feet dry; the boots you buy will be for extra padding and traction.

They tend to be more lightweight and cheaper, extra boot purchase notwithstanding. If you already own boots, stockings might be your best option.

Shape/Style

Like with footwear, the style of waders can vary, too. The shortest style is hip waders. Hip waders work best in shallower waters.

fishing in camo waders

They’re somewhat like chaps, that fit over each individual leg. They’re easy to transport, though they take slightly more effort to put on.

They’re best for short distances, shallow waters, or for short term work like launching boats or looking for clams. They usually strap to a belt.

Waist-high waders are the intermediate option. They are basically wading pants which you put on like a pair of jeans.

They can be secured with a belt or with suspenders. They come up a bit higher than hip level.

Waist waders allow for unrestricted movement of the upper body but higher water levels than the previous option.

The third option is chest waders. Even though they come up the highest, they’re actually the most “free” option for fishermen.

womens waders

The chest waders come with built-in suspenders and can be used in water levels as high as the rib cage.

The best chest waders for the money are usually ideal for unknown conditions; if you’re visiting a new area and you don’t know about dips or drop-offs in the water, chest waders can be a lifesaver.

They also provide the most protection against water conditions, no matter the height.

Extra Features

This can mean any number of things. Many waders have a different number of pockets, including chest pockets on the higher ones.

man casting out a fly rod

Some have knee pads or rings for equipment. Others have built-in belt loops. Be sure to check out the features of waders you’re looking at to choose the best fishing waders for your needs.

Conclusion

All of these wader options are very affordable, and they each have their merits and drawbacks.

Whether you need fly fishing waders, womens waders, or kids waders, you can find a great pair without breaking the bank.

Using our handy buyer’s guide, you’ll be able to find the perfect pair. Check out these high-quality, cheap waders and get to fishing!

  • Does anyone sell a stocking foot wader where the foot is not neoprene?
One used to buy waders where the foot was made out of the same material as the rest of the wader: nylon, or what have you.
